Landscaping

Our landscaping program promotes landscaping practices that are less polluting, use less energy, generate less maintenance noise and, where appropriate, incorporate native plants, edible plants or lawn alternatives.

We invite people to think about why they have so much lawn and if they really want and use it all. We encourage folks who like lawns to have a “turf area” but not use lawn as a default for their entire yard. Lawns require frequent maintenance (energy use and noise), are often maintained with pesticides, irrigation and too much fertilizer, and decrease biodiverity. Taking even a small amount of one’s yard out of lawn has a significant impact.

We also invite people to consider why we maintain commercial planting areas (“beds”) as we do – with a high reliance on chemical pesticides and loud, polluting machinery.

The pages in this section will identify “areas for improvement” in our current landscaping practices and then walk through landscaping with native plants, edibles and lawn alternatives. They will also discuss residential settings as well as commercial and municipal sites. Enjoy … and dig in!
